Magnetism and Compass Physics Surprises

Thinking about the fact that, you were taught that given 2 magnets, the opposite “poles” attract. That means, with 2 magnets, the magnetic north pole on one will be attracted to the negative south pole on the second magnet, and will stick together.

Think about something much bigger. Like earth sized. The earth has a mantle of very hot, mobile magnetic metals, which causes the earth to have a magnetic field. This field is very defined with a north pole in the Arctic, while the south pole is in the Antarctic Where does the arrow on the compass point to? Logically, as we were taught, the compass always points to “magnetic north”. This would mean that, if the north pole on the compass arrow points north, we are experiencing something not not south like we were always taught.

Would you believe me that the “north arrow” on the compass actually points to magnetic south, and the “south pole” on the compass points to the north. Fortunately, most GPS software will be related to be smarter, more reliable and will learn how to keep pointing
